Make sure that you meet the CDL requirements of your state.

Have money ready for the application fee, knowledge, and practical tests.

Decide on the type of CDL vehicle you want to do the test for.

Start studying the CDL handbook or training guide.

Fill out and hand in your CDL application, after which you'll be required to take the knowledge test.

When you're confident, apply for the practical test.

Once you've passed the knowledge test, you can begin to practice driving a CDL vehicle.

You must show up to your test with the type of CDL vehicle you plan on driving, e.g. a A class.

If you pass, you'll receive an interim CDL while you wait for your official CDL to come in the mail.
